Morton Edgar's 1924 Pyramid books--PDFs!

he is better known for his collaboration with his brother dr john edgar in the 2 volume set "great pyramid passages.

" those 2 volumes were published during c.t.

russell's lifetime and then were subsequently reprinted (with some revisions) in 1923. the edgar brothers wrote in support of the idea that the great pyramid confirmed russell's "divine plan" and also corroborated russell's chronology.

Very interesting post Cabasilas. I knew Russell was into pyramids but didn't know it carried on well into Rutherfords time.

I had to laugh at the Golden Age PDF you linked to. The first paragraph has a statement by Ben Franklin about technological progress and future morality and the mag says it's a prophetic inspiration based on statements in the bible!
This from one of the leading intellects of the enlightenment who rejected religion and the bible and who argued morality was seperate from both.

Looks like the WBTS has never changed it's ways in misquoting authorities to serve it's own agenda.

my grandmother and grandfather are both jehovah's witnesses.. i dont understand much about their religion just that they dont celebrate holidays such as christmas.. well today i went over to their house for a visit since they live 2 hours away and my cousins were there too.. we were all in the kitchen eating cookies and my brother said that we baked cookies but ours were for santa clause.

well then my grandma said that she doesnt celebrate christmas and she doesnt believe in santa.

so i say "well i do" and she says "well that means youre naiive and decieved".

Like has been said it's all part of the programming JW's have to give them the illusion of seperateness from 'worldly' people they see as being under the devil. As I wrote that it sounded preposterous, and it is, but it's what they believe. And I did too years ago.

Blackswan's suggestion of talking to your mom and dad is a good one. I'm assuming they may have come across this issue in the past and know how to deal with it.

The way I think of it is that holidays are like full moons to JW's and they go a bit loony. Leave them to their own devices for those days and get back to them when it's finished and they'll be back to normal, or as normal as they can be.

The actual text of Genesis doesn't equate the serpent who tempted Eve with Satan or a Devilish figure. In fact in the whole OT the concept of Satan is kind of shadowy. He isn't a fully formed character but more a concept of the opposition to Jehovah's will.
It's not till the NT that a familiar Devil character shows up, which was borrowed from the mythologies and philosophies of the nations round about during the 400 years up to Jesus. Then it took the Catholic church to really put the evilness in to Satan the Devil.
So yeah, Satan gets a raw deal. He keeps getting blamed for stuff he didn't do.

Family Guy mention of Jehovah's Witnesses

did anyone see the family guy episode this week that had peter singing the praises of being rich.. .

one line in the song was you can stop the "jehoovahs at the gate" , they showed a witness being stopped at the gate while getting smacked in the head with a watchtower.. .

i love this show, especially stewie..

JW article "Armageddon, Inc." in the Saturday Evening Post

has anybody ever seen the article in the saturday evening post called "armageddon, inc"?

i can't post it due to copyright issues, but if you have access to a library or university archives, it is definitely worth it!

it was printed in 1940, but other than the references to the "judge" it reads like it was printed yesterday!

The catholic-forum site is a great resource for JW history. I'd never seen it before but it's got some good early stuff there.

What Do You Know About Wicca?

for as long as i can remember, i think wicca is one of the most misunderstood of all religions.

last week, in my nature writing and literature class, a friend of mine gave a presentation of the history of wicca and an explanation of their beliefs.

basically in a nutshell, she said that wicca's believe that everything in life goes in a circle, from the life and death cycle to the calendar of holidays they celebrate.. i asked several questions, mainly trying to determine if they are a cult like the watchtower.

In other words, the Witnesses are just renting the building; a building which they worked on, built and clean and pay to use it, yet it's not theirs. Doesn't seem fair.

LOL. Yeah but don't try and tell 'em. All the Jw's I've talked to about it think they do own the KH. I'm not sure how they think this would in practice anyway; cong disbanded or taken into another hall, hall sold off and the proceeds divvied up between all the publishers? Not likely. Churches work in the same way in that it's paid for by donations but the cong don't actually own it. The difference is that churches are often useful public buildings for community activities and secular clubs etc, whereas KH's are off limits apart from the dissemination of the orgs own variety of BS.

As for JW's with their hand in the till I've only had one experience of that. The accounts servant had been taking money from the contributions to pay for various things (he was a pretty poor chap) and I believe with the full intention of paying it back. Anyway he got demoted to publisher and that was that, which was fair enough I suppose.

JW's are an honest bunch by and large, probably cos of reading My Book Of Bible Stories and the tale of Achan and all his family getting stoned (with rocks (the big hard stoney kind)) for nicking stuff.

Did you ever???

this is going to sound like a strange question - but throughout my years in the organization, i would hear reports of those coming out of the world into the truth who had problems with demons.

i mean people who would swear that satan or his demons literally caused supernatural occurrences that they were witnesses of.

does anyone have any real, honest stories of demon influence or encounter?

Heathen - Yeah it is just my opinion and I tried not to categorically say nothing supernatural occurred. What I was trying to say is that the ghost stories I have heard through the years that have been convincing with corroborating evidence from various people have tended to unravel when you get to what actually happened.

I would love to hear a rock solid story about a supernatural happening. It would be fascinating to figure out the scientific explanations for the occurrences. I studied physics at college so I'm always interested in the fundamentals of the physical world. There's some interesting hypothesis around about how consciousness works. One is that it doesn't dwell in the physical aspect of the brain but in the electromagnetic field surrounding the body and hence could possibly survive the death of that body. Another is that the energies of the person is absorbed by the surroundings while they are alive and continue to resonate after they die. I'm open minded on a lot of these theories. However I've yet to hear a totally convincing experience that can't be explained in other terms apart from the supernatural. That's also true for organisations like CSICOP who have $million up for grabs for any scientific proof.
What I reject is the religious aspect to supernatural things; that these apparitions or occurrences are somehow for your benefit or hindrance or to be feared or worshipped.

CHRISTMAS CAROLS...................SATANIC ??

i have just been listening to my new cd of a choir singing christmas carols.. ive never really listened to the words properly before, but they really are beautiful.

i know some witness who would put their hands over their ears and tra-la-la, to avoid being contaminated by these satanic songs...........................i always secretly loved them but even i would avoid listening to them.

my favorite has always been silent night.

There's always a double standard with a lot of JW's cos I know some listen to opera and classical music which often incorporates hymns,carols and the like, but that's seen as art. If they're sung in a church or at xmas time then they suddenly become demonic.
